In this blog post, we will share our top tips on how to pass your MOT the first time, including an MOT checklist covering all the essential areas you need to check before your MOT test. Follow our advice to ensure you’re well prepared for your next MOT, and you can be confident that your vehicle is safe and roadworthy.

What is an MOT?

An MOT test is an annual inspection that is required by law in the UK for vehicles that are more than three years old.

The test is designed to ensure that your  vehicle meets minimum environmental and road safety standards.

During an MOT, a qualified tester will inspect various components of your vehicle, including the brakes, steering, suspension, tyres, lights, and emissions. If your vehicle meets the minimum standards, the tester will issue an MOT certificate, which is valid for one year. If the vehicle fails to meet the standards, you will need to have the necessary repairs carried out and then have your vehicle retested before you can legally drive it on the road.

The purpose of the MOT test is to help ensure that all vehicles on the road meet basic safety and environmental standards.

While an MOT test covers various components of a vehicle, it’s important to note that it does not assess the condition of the engine, gearbox or clutch. Passing the MOT test does not necessarily mean that the vehicle will remain safe to drive for the duration of the certificate. Regular maintenance is crucial, and it’s essential to keep an eye out for any common signs of issues with your vehicle.

If any problems arise, it’s best to have them addressed quickly by SB Autocare.

Why you need an MOT certificate

You need an MOT certificate in the UK if your vehicle is more than three years old because it is a legal requirement.

The certificate is issued after your vehicle passes an annual MOT test that checks that your vehicle meets the minimum environmental and road safety standards.

Driving a vehicle without a valid MOT certificate is illegal and could result in a fine, penalty points, or even the possibility of your vehicle being impounded. In addition, having a valid MOT certificate is required to obtain road tax and to keep your car insurance valid.

Moreover, a valid MOT certificate is an essential document that proves your vehicle is roadworthy, and it helps ensure the safety of you and other road users. Therefore, it’s crucial to schedule an MOT test for your vehicle annually and to have any necessary repairs made promptly to ensure your vehicle remains safe to drive.

MOT Tips

What areas of my car should I check to help get it through its MOT?

With our MOT checklist, you’ll give your vehicle the best chance of passing the MOT the first time, saving you money. If you follow the MOT checklist below, you will have a better chance of passing the MOT the first time.

  • Front Lights

Clean and inspect your front lights to ensure they are working correctly. Check your side lights (normally the first position on your light switch), dip beam, and main beam. Finally, check your indicators and then your hazards.

  • Rear Lights

When checking your rear lights, you will need assistance from someone you know. Press the brake pedal and ensure all brake lights work, including a high-level strip light if fitted. Finally, check your indicators and hazard lights.

  • Number Plates

Ensure that both number plates are clean. If they aren’t, a quick wipe-over with a cloth will make a big difference. If you have a private plate, make sure it meets the legal requirements on the font and spacing.

MOT Tips

  • Wheels and Tyres

Take a look at your wheels and tyres to check for any signs of damage.

The minimum legal tread depth is 1.6mm. It’ll fail if a tyre is below this across the centre ¾ of the tread width (around the entire circumference).

MOT Tips

  • Seats and Seatbelts

The driver’s seat needs to be able to move backwards and forwards. Your seat should also be able to be locked in position. Make sure your seat belts are secure, lock into position, and retract when necessary, as well as that there is no damage along their length.

Finally, check that the buckle latches in the locking mechanism and releases as required.

  • Windscreen

Make sure no damage is bigger than 10mm in the driver’s line of sight or 40mm where the wipers sweep the screen. If you notice any damage bigger than the recommended size, first of all, check your insurance, as you may have windscreen cover, and you may be able to remedy that fault before bringing your vehicle to us.

  • Washers and Wipers

Ensure your washers have enough fluid to clean the screen. It’s also worth checking your wiper blades for tears or holes since any damage could lead to a failure. We stock all common sizes if you find an issue or need a replacement.

  • Horn

With a quick push of your horn, you should be able to sound a warning loud enough for other road users to hear. You must ensure yours is close to standard, as bells, sirens, twin tone and musical horns are not allowed.

  • Oil and Fuel Levels

You will have to have your engine running while your MOT is being performed. Make sure your oil level is correct before we start the test (refer to your handbook for instructions).

In addition, make sure your car has enough fuel to make it through the test.

MOT Tips

  • Warning Lights

You’ll notice warning lights illuminating and extinguishing as you turn the ignition on. Some of these are covered in an MOT.

Finally, please make sure that you don’t have warning lights on for your safety restraint, anti-lock braking, electronic stability control, engine management systems and tyre pressure monitoring.
