VW Polo Power Steering Fault

VW Polo Power Steering Fault

Before contacting SB Autocare, Mr G’s Volkswagen Polo had already been seen for repair work.

“They said the pump had been changed, but it doesn’t seem to have fixed the issue.”

Despite the replacement, the steering warning light remained on, and power assistance had not returned. The car was still heavy to steer, particularly at low speeds, and the original issue was clearly unresolved.

With the problem still present, Mr G wanted to understand why the power steering system had not come back into operation and what was stopping it from working as it should.

The next step was to book the Volkswagen Polo into SB Autocare in Wellingborough for a full technical evaluation. That meant starting again, looking at how the steering system was behaving as a whole, and working through the issue step by step.

With the vehicle scheduled in, attention turned to identifying what was preventing the steering assistance from returning and why the problem had continued.

VW Polo Power Steering Fault

Initial System Checks for VW Polo Power Steering Fault

When Mr G’s Volkswagen Polo arrived at SB Autocare in Wellingborough, the steering fault was easy to reproduce. Power steering assistance was not available, and a steering warning light was displayed on the dashboard. This behaviour was confirmed during the initial inspection.

We then looked over the steering work that had already been carried out prior to the vehicle coming to us. A steering pump and motor unit had been replaced, but the symptoms reported by Mr G were still present. With no change in how the system behaved, the first stage of our technical evaluation began.

Our initial checks focused on the steering system itself and the recently fitted components. The pump and motor unit showed no visible damage, and there were no signs of fluid leaks, loose fittings, or disturbed wiring. As nothing obvious stood out during visual inspection, further testing was required.

The steering control module was then checked using Volkswagen dealer-level diagnostic equipment, where one stored fault code was identified:

  • Fault code 00816 power steering sensor (G250)

Fault code 00816 points to a signal issue within the power steering system. At this stage, it’s impossible to know whether the fault is related to the sensor itself, pump compatibility, or system configuration following installation. Or another part of the steering system.

With the fault code 00816 for the power steering sensor (G250) recorded and the symptoms matching what we observed during testing, we proceeded to the next stage of the diagnostic process to determine the cause of the power steering issue on Mr G’s VW Polo.

Diagnosing the VW Polo Power Steering Fault

With fault code 00816 still present and the VW Polo power steering fault unchanged after the initial evaluation, we moved into a more detailed diagnostic phase. At this stage, the focus was on identifying why the steering system had disabled assistance and what information it was no longer able to process.

Each stage of testing was carried out in sequence, with the results of one check informing the next.

Step 1: Verifying electrical supply to the steering pump

The first step was to confirm that the steering pump and motor unit were receiving the correct electrical supply.

Using Volkswagen wiring information, we identified the main power and ground circuits at the pump connector and tested them with the ignition switched on.

What we found:

  • Battery voltage was present at the pump.
  • The ground circuit tested within specification.
  • No electrical supply faults were identified.

This confirmed that the pump and motor unit were being powered correctly, allowing us to rule out a supply-related cause.

Step 2: Assessing steering system data and communication

With the electrical supply confirmed, we connected our ODIS diagnostic system to assess communication and data from the steering control module.

We reviewed the fault memory and checked the serial data being reported by the steering system.

What we found:

  • The steering control module was responsive.
  • Network communication was intact.
  • The signal from the power steering sensor (G250) was missing or invalid.

Because the system could not interpret the sensor signal, steering assistance had been disabled as a safety measure. This ruled out a complete control module failure.

Step 3: Checking steering pump compatibility

As a replacement pump and motor unit had already been fitted prior to the vehicle arriving with us, it was important to confirm that the installed unit was suitable for this Volkswagen Polo.

We cross-checked the fitted part number against Volkswagen’s parts database using the vehicle’s VIN. We also reviewed steering system variants used on this model, as different suppliers and configurations were fitted depending on specification.

What we found:

  • The pump and motor unit fitted did not match the original specification for this vehicle.
  • The internal configuration of the unit did not align with what the steering control module expected.

This mismatch explained why fault code 00816 power steering sensor (G250) was being stored and why the system was unable to process the sensor signal correctly.

Step 4: Confirming coding and configuration status

Even when the correct hardware is installed, steering pump units must be coded to the vehicle to function correctly.

Using ODIS, we accessed the pump’s control module and checked whether the coding and configuration process had been completed following installation.

What we found:

  • The replacement pump and motor unit had not been coded to the vehicle.
  • Without correct configuration, the steering system could not interpret the sensor signal.

This confirmed the underlying cause of the fault. The previously fitted pump and motor unit was both incompatible with the vehicle and left uncoded, resulting in fault code 00816 and the continued loss of power steering assistance.

VW Power Steering Repair to Restore Steering Function

With the fault clearly identified, we talked Mr G through what the steering system needed and how the repair would be carried out. Once approval was given, work began on restoring the VW Polo’s power steering correctly.

  • The replacement steering pump and motor unit was selected by matching the vehicle’s VIN against Volkswagen’s parts database, ensuring the unit matched the original specification fitted to this model.
  • Before fitting the new unit, the surrounding components were inspected. Wiring, connectors, and hydraulic lines around the rear-mounted steering fluid tank were checked to confirm there were no signs of damage, contamination, or disturbed connections.
  • The previously fitted pump and motor unit was removed, and the correct OEM replacement installed. All fixings and connections were secured to manufacturer torque specifications.
  • The power steering hydraulic system was refilled with the correct fluid and bled following Volkswagen’s recommended procedure to remove any trapped air.
  • Using ODIS, Volkswagen’s dealer-level diagnostic tool, the new pump was coded and configured to the vehicle. This allowed the steering control module to recognise the replacement unit correctly.
  • The stored fault code was cleared, and the system was tested. The steering warning light switched off, power steering operation returned, and the system performed normally during post-repair checks.

Power Steering Issue Resolved and Normal Operation Restored

After the correct pump and motor unit had been fitted and configured, the Volkswagen Polo’s power steering system returned to normal operation. The steering warning light was no longer present, and power steering support was restored, making the car comfortable and predictable to drive again.

Although earlier repair work elsewhere had not resolved the issue, our structured technical evaluation allowed the cause of the fault to be identified and corrected during a single visit. This confirmed that the problem lay with system compatibility and configuration rather than the presence of a new component alone.

While the repair was carried out, Mr G was able to remain mobile using our free courtesy car. The work was completed with SB Autocare’s 12-month parts and labour guarantee, providing reassurance once the vehicle was back on the road.
